When we named our first child, we didn’t look to see if the name was popular or not- and were surprised that a name we thought was pretty unique- wasn’t. To find out where the names you are considering or have chosen rank, take a look at this article from CNN. It seems that the top baby names are Emma (not Emily) and Jacob.
But, you might also want to take a quick look at this article on the most popular New York baby names from Nameberry.

Having a new baby can be one of the most wonderful things in the world. However, it can also be pretty isolating. Luckily, new moms have something that their mothers didn’t have: the internet. However, while the internet can be a blessing, it can also be a curse according to an article from CNN.com entitled Why Moms are at Risk for Internet Addiction.
I must admit, when I first read the article, I, just like Tech Mama, dismissively said- then According to CNN I’m Addicted to the Internet. I shook my head saying clearly if you are taking drugs to stay up to be on the internet, like one extreme case mentioned in the article, then you have a problem and should seek appropriate help. But, I don’t do that. But. . .

At my baby shower I registered for and received a baby swing. I picked a cute model that had a lot of bells and whistles, thinking that my baby would love it. When the time came, I put my baby in the swing, turned it on and wahhhhhhhhh.
So, I pretty much gave up on a baby swing until I went to a friend’s house. She had one that went not only front to back but also side to side. She encouraged me to try it out and, that beautiful side to side motion lulled my baby right to sleep.
We have since learned that it is not unusual for babies to hate swings. Consequently, we have two pieces of advice to give with regards to swings:

When you have a new baby, there will be times when you wished you had an extra set of hands. We are conjuring images of the goddess Kali here. However, don’t despair, there are some items on the market that will help you get your hands free again.
SLINGS:
Maya Wrap: I saw a new mom wearing this at Rite Aid and was jealous. I am sure I would have loved this wrap with my children- especially since I nursed and the extra fabric at the end could have been used to cover me and baby. The Maya Wrap is basically a long piece of cloth with a rung that can be worn in several different ways. My first child was a preemie and we had to wait a bit until we could use the Baby Bjorn I had received as a shower gift. I am guessing this would have been a good solution. Thingamababy provides a nice review of the Maya Wrap. The base model Maya Wrap retails for about $65.95.
Hotslings: These slings are a little different, there is no tail to allow the user to adjust the sling. They fit over your shoulder and the baby is just put inside the pouch. The base model sling retails for about $49.99.
CARRIERS:
Ergo Baby Carrier: Our friend who has 4 children used this last carrier, instead of the Baby Bjorn, with baby #3. She just bought the insert and is using it with her new infant and loves it. She told me that she has carried every child in her Ergo Carrier, including her 4 year old (carried on her back). Indeed, she knows someone who carried their older child on their back at Disney using this carrier. For a review of the Ergo Baby Carrier look at this post from A Giveaway Addicted Mommy. The base model Ergo Carrier retails for about $104.00.
Baby Bjorn: Hoboken Mom and Metro Mom both used the Baby Bjorn. With my second child, I upgraded and purchased the one that had a belt at the hip. Having used both I can say that I prefered the one without the belt for when baby was smaller (it was less bulky) but I didn’t want to carry my bigger baby (5 months plus) for too long in the Bjorn if I was using the one without the belt. On the flipside, the belt made the Bjorn more bulky and made me sweat more. Upscale Baby Blog has a review of the original model. The base model Baby Bjorn (without the belt) retails for about $79.99.
Before you decide to buy one of these items, look at this baby carrier review post from Momopoly in which a mommy who has used a lot of these items gives you the pros and cons of each.
